Managing Conflict

In this activity, students listen to two people trying to resolve a dispute at work with the help of a mediator. They then complete comprehension and vocabulary exercises. The transcript is provided.

Language Forms & Functions:
Vocabulary
  • Adjectives describing personality, e.g., energetic, positive, outgoing, etc
  • Words relating to conflicts and disputes, e.g., flexible, constructive, judgemental, crucial, etc
  • Phrasal verbs, e.g., settle on, sort out , set about , stick to, etc

Language Skills:
Listening
  • Listen for main ideas and extract specific information from spoken texts
  • Deduce meaning of unknown words through contextual clues

Remarks / User Tips:
  • This resource is suitable for more able students. It could be used for reading or listening practice.
  • For less able students, teachers may pre-teach the necessary vocabulary before they read or listen to the text. They may also read the questions before listening.
  • As an extended activity, students may share in groups about their experience of dealing with conflicts with other people.
